FAIRFIELD — Newtown High School's boys' lacrosse team, the No. 17 seed in the Class L State Tournament, went on the road and defeated No. 16 Fairfield Warde 9-8 in qualifying-round action on May 26.

With the win, the Nighthawks will head back to Fairfield to take on top seed Fairfield Prep in the first round on Wednesday, May 31, at 4:30 pm.

Against Warde, Colby Harrell scored three goals and had two assists; Sean Reilly scored twice; Sam Steare had a goal and two assists; Marcus Gerace netted a goal and had an assist; and Asher Williams and Kyle Ruddy also scored.

Stites had ten ground ball scoops and won 16 of 21 faceoffs, and Braden Macey had six ground balls. Goaltender Reilly Nydell made five saves.
