It was a busy, and successful, afternoon and evening for Newtown High School teams, on May 26.

The softball team, behind Lauren Wilcox’s no-hitter, advanced to the South-West Conference championship game with a 12-0 win over Pomperaug of Southbury, at Stratford’s DeLuca Field. The boys’ lacrosse team also reached the SWC championship round with a convincing win, as the Nighthawk laxmen beat New Milford 13-4 in their semifinal contest, held at Brookfield High. For the second year in a row, Newtown’s girls’ track and field team earned second place in the SWC championship meet, at Weston High.

Kamdynn Moroney blasted a first-inning grand slam, and Emily Woznick added a three-run homer as the top-seeded softball squad advanced to take on No. 2 Joel Barlow of Redding in the pinnacle game, set to be played at DeLuca Field on Wednesday, May 27, beginning at 7 pm.

On the lacrosse field, the conference’s championship clash will also feature a Newtown-Barlow matchup. The fourth-seeded Nighthawks built a 7-1 halftime lead in their win over top-seeded New Milford, a team they nipped by just a goal in the regular campaign. Barlow, the No. 2 squad in the bracket, defeated New Fairfield in the other semifinal matchup. The Falcons beat Newtown 10-8 in the regular-season finale. Barlow is the designated home site for the title game, so the Falcons will have home field advantage against the defending conference champion Nighthawks when the teams square off on Thursday, May 28, at 7 pm.

Check back for game coverage and read more about these teams in the May 29 print edition of The Bee.

Lauren Wilcox throws a pitch during Newtown's 12-0 win over Pomperaug in the conference semifinals, in Stratford, on May 26. Wilcox threw a no-hitter to lift the Hawks into the championship game. Second baseman Sara Kennedy looks on and prepares for anything that may come her way.
