Free Computers For Students
DANBURY â Literacy Volunteers of Danbury has announced that it will award 12 working computers to 12 deserving students, in the literacy programs here. Getting a computer will depend on a nomination by the studentâs tutor, and it will be theirs to keep.
LVA will be holding a potluck supper, in conjunction with their annual international dinner and awards ceremony. This dinner, open to all interested in LVA, will be held at Hatterâs Park, 7 Hayestown Road in Danbury. It will be from 7 to 8 pm on June 23.
While the dinner and awards program are free, all those attending are asked to bring an ethnic dish, with enough to feed their group and some extra for others. LVA can be contacted at 792-8260, to make reservations and for more information.
LVA-Danbury is now in its 22nd year, tutoring students from many countries, including Brazil, Columbia, Peru, Central America, Mexico, and Southeast Asia. Having tutored over 1,000 students, LVA is putting out a desperate appeal for tutors, since there is a waiting list of over 100 students awaiting tutors. Tutors do not have to be experienced; LVA gives an instruction course of 18 hours, which can qualify an individual.
The theme of this yearâs awards dinner will be âGreat Partnerships,â and there will be an opportunity for all to meet Tom Pinkham, the new LVA executive director.
