Newtown High School's girls' lacrosse team, seeded fourth in the South-West Conference Tournament, fell 15-10 to top-seeded New Fairfield in the semifinals, at Joel Barlow High in Redding, on May 24.

When the Hawks met the New Fairfield Rebels earlier in the season, Newtown fell in a close 16-15 match. As the teams faced off again in the postseason, the score remained familiarly close the first half with New Fairfield only up 9-7 at halftime.

New Fairfield broke away from Newtown at the beginning of second half with a string of unreciprocated goals.

"I think my team played well. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't sad we didn't come out with a win," said Newtown Coach Amanda Mastera, adding that there's something to be said for a young team to stay competitive with New Fairfield throughout the contest.

The Nighthawk offense was led by Charli Condon and Julia Sughrue, netting three goals each. Alex Futterman, Nevan Gattey, Brianna Sclafani and Julia Wiberg also added goals to the Newtown tally.

Newtown goaltender Tess Davenport made 11 saves.

The Nighthawks advanced to the semis with a 14-6 win over No. 5 Brookfield in the quarterfinals.
