IFS Plays Key Role

 In Boston’s ‘Big Dig’

International Fiber Systems Incorporated (IFS), of Newtown, a leading manufacturer of fiber optic transmission networking equipment, is a key provider of technical solutions being rolled out as part of a massive infrastructure project reshaping the Greater Boston transportation system.

Awarded the contract to supply fiber optic digital video and date transmission equipment for Boston’s Central Artery/Tunnel Project (CA/T) –  the so-called “Big Dig” – IFS will supply more than 330 digital video transmission links for the project’s extensive closed-circuit television (CCTV) system, as well as more than 350 data links for the traffic signalization network, and eight DS-1 (T1) links for interfacing to the system SONET backbone.

Big in terms of its sheer breadth, the Big Dig is also considered the biggest ITS (intelligent transportation system) ever undertaken. An ITS or intelligent transportation system is the integration of advanced communications and information processing technologies, applied to improving the transportation efficiency, safety, and air quality along the nation’s new and existing highway and mass-transit infrastructure.

Because of its expertise in satisfying specialized CCTV video and data transmission requirements – in this case the Newtown company developed a unique technical solution for the CA/T – IFS beat out a large field of Big Dig competitors.

Other key factors in IFS’ selection were its acknowledged ability to meet tight delivery deadlines and its excellent performance with Allied Signal on the North Carolina Department of Transportation’s recent CARAT Intelligent Transportation System construction project. Established in 1989, IFS is at the forefront of advances in fiber optic technologies. The company offers more than 300 analog and digital fiber optic products for commercial and industrial applications, which include CCTV, access control, data transmission, fire and alarm system applications, intelligent transportation systems, facility and building automation, and broadcast systems.

The company is located on Commerce Road in Newtown. For more information, call Bruce Berman at 426-1180; or e-mail IFS at sales@ifs.com. IFS is on the World Wide Web at www.ifs.com.
