Saddened By Lose The Litter Response
To the Editor,
As you have read in an earlier Bee article (“Newtown Celebrates Earth Day With Annual Festival,” May 3, 2024), Newtown’s Earth Day went well. The day was perfect, there seemed always to be a good crowd and the provided music, especially by the high school band, excellent.
As far as Lose the Litter aspect of Earth Day we had eleven Lions, the Newtown Congregational Church youth group and the Leo Club from the high school cleaning roads, town parks and school grounds. In addition, we had three Newtown families come forward to help with the project. All this was good.
But it wasn’t nearly enough. Other years we have had at least six families and often ten or more who volunteered. Where were they this year? Among the missing were any scout troops. Lose the Litter seems a natural project for a Scout group but only Troop 270 participated this year.
Overall, I am saddened that there was so little response to this project which was meant to keep our good town looking beautiful.
Sincerely,
Gordon Williams
