Newtown High School's Chess Club hosted its annual Open Chess Tournament on Thursday, May 12, after school, in the building's cafetorium. For the second year in a row, Brendan Gregory earned first place.

The annual tournament is a fundraiser for the NHS Chess Club.

Chess Club advisor Steve Malary welcomed the four participating students to the event, and arranged snacks near the tournament table. Dr Malary also explained there was one prize for the tournament's winner and two raffle prizes.

Dunkin' Donuts donated a $10 gift certificate, Bagel Delight donated a certificate for ten bagels, and The Villa Restaurant donated a certificate for a large cheese pizza.

Along with Brendan, Jack Whelan, Thomas Stannczyk, and Scott Alexander participated.

Dr Malary said three rounds were held for each player to compete against the other participants.

"That will represent a fair test and we will understand who ends up winning at the end of it," said Dr Malary, before the tournament began.
