Womanâs Club Members Win Awards
Members of the Newtown Womanâs Club, GFWC, received awards at the organizationâs recent state convention.
First-place certificates were awarded to the Newtown club in these categories: Arts ââ Literature and Performing Arts; Education ââ Kids and Grandparents; International Affairs ââ United Nations Program; Home Life ââ special projects.
Honorable mentions were awarded for Outreach for Children; International Affairs ââ special projects; Home Life ââ womenâs health; Public Affairs ââ historic preservation; Public Affairs ââcitizenship. The club also received a special achievement award for its publicity book.
Barbara Krausz received first prize for a short story; Marianne Scanlon took first price in the one-act play category.
In the Arts and Crafts category, Newtown members won 11 first-place awards. Peg Forbell took three first-place awards for sewing-caftan; Christmas decoration ââ stocking, and needlepoint. Marilyn Alexander received first place awards for two knitting projects, a vest and a baby romper. Other winners included Rosemary Rau, garden flag; Coke Cramer, photography; Rita Lapati, acrylic, âTeresa of Calcuttaâ; Ginny Chiaramonte, sewing, Indian outfit; Flo Caron, theorem painting; and Lynn Butter, decoupage vase.
The second-prize winners included Betty Doty, crochet, scarf; Lorraine VanderWende, crochet-knit; Marion Thompson; knitting, mittens, and Betty Warner, knitting, blanket.
Third place winners were: Norma Grey, Heritage, decoupage; Ruth Campbell, sewing, wall hanging; Betty Doty, sewing, tote bag; Marianne Scanlon, oil painting, garden gate.
