Rain Or Shine, Ducks To Splash Down
On Saturday For Pootatuck Race
The Third Annual Great Pootatuck Duck Race will splash down on Saturday, May 24, in Sandy Hook Center, rain or shine.
Face painters, magicians, musicians and a Moon Walk all will help make the day festive. Mike Porcoâs Newtown Karate Academy will demonstrate karate skills from 11 am to noon, while at 1 pm the Yankee Maids division of the Sweet Adelines will sing for the crowd. Going on all day will be a Methodist Church tag sale inside the church house to benefit the Children of Africa, orphans from the civil wars and famine. The Governorâs Horse Guard will provide pony rides and will herald the advent of the splash down on the ducks. The Visiting Nurse Association will do eye screening for children.
Twenty-five booths from various Newtown organizations are scheduled to hawk their wares or to hand out flyers about their organizations.
The time of the Duck Race festivities will be 10 am until 2 pm when the ducks will be sent on their way down the Pootatuck River. The prizes will be given out about 2:45 pm. First prize is a Cub Cadet 15-horsepower tractor while the second is a weekend in New York. Other prizes include a framed print by noted Newtown artist Betty Christiansen, an X-Box Game Cube, karate lessons, health club memberships, dinners out, and tanning solon certificates.
Tickets will be available until about 1 pm on Friday, May 23, at various places around the town including the library, Sandy Hook Liquor Store, and Newtown Drug Center. They may also be obtained from any Lion and will be on sale the day of the race from about 9 am on.
In addition to the Great Pootatuck Duck Race, another interesting event that day will be the Newtown High School Band Parents Association juried craft show. From 1 am to 5 pm in front of Canaan House at Fairfield Hills, fine crafters will present their work for sale.
