A mere 10 points – that’s it.

The bid by the Newtown High School girls’ track team to finish the 2003 regular season undefeated fell just 10 points short as the Lady Nighthawks crushed New Fairfield (106-44) and Immaculate (144-2), but fell to Weston (80-70) on Tuesday afternoon.

The ‘Hawks drop to 13-1-1 while Weston boosts its record to 13-2. That will sure set up an interesting showdown next week (Wednesday, May 28, in Newtown) when the South-West Conference championship is held.

Leah Herity (100-meter dash, pole vault) and Jacky Curran (high jump, triple jump) were double winners for the ‘Hawks while Carolyn Brennan (3,200 meters) was a solo winner. The 4x100 relay team (Herity, Quincey Blanchard, Allison Frobey and Caitlin Weber) and the 4x400 relay team (Kate Stickles, Tara Gaston, Sarah Macknight and Frobey) were also winners.

Stickles (400 meters, 800 meters), Herity (200 dash), Blanchard (pole vault), Curran (long jump) and Kaitlyn Murphy (javelin) all earned second-place finishes to bolster the Newtown attack. Weber, meanwhile, was third in the 100 high hurdles, just 1.6 seconds off the lead.

The Lady Trojans captured 10 out of 18 first-place finishes to earn the sweep.

The results:

Weston 80, NHS 70

NHS 106, New Fairfield 44

NHS 144, Immaculate 2
