AFS Host Family Needed

The Newtown High School American Field Service Chapter is looking for a family in Newtown to host an AFS student for the 2003–04 school year. The chapter sponsors and exchange student each year.

Thousands of high schools in the United States make the decision to host one or more international exchange students. The benefit to the school is the opportunity for local students to learn more about the world without ever leaving home.

Teachers who have had AFS exchange students in their classrooms speak of the students giving world history and social studies new insight, making the wider world real. By hosting an AFS exchange student, schools not only contribute to the cultural richness of their communities, but also to the lives of the students in the school.

The host family is allowed to select the student’s country of origin, the gender of the student, and often the grade in school. AFS encourages the host family to “make the match” when volunteering to host an exchange student. AFS does not pay families to host. Host families open their homes for the many experiences it will receive from hosting.

Anyone interested in hosting a student from AFS International this fall, call Newtown High School at 426-7646 and direct calls to Mrs Van Tassel.
