Writing about gardens used to be a sideline for Mrs Duncan. The public relations company she has headed for 30 years came first. But of late, it is garden writing that has been moving up front.

Mrs Duncan has written a monthly garden article since 1983 for Connecticut magazine, which published Down To Earth, a collection of her articles. About Mrs Duncan’s writing, Liz Claiborne has said, “Like her, Rea Duncan’s garden columns sparkle with wit, humor and passionate love of the earth and all its wonders.”

For the past five years Mrs Duncan has written a weekly column for The News-Times, and articles for Fairfield Home and Housatonic Home. Her columns draw extraordinary response; one on Chinese tree peonies drew 1,400 inquiries.

Says Mrs Duncan, “The reason for all this heart-warming empathy is not because I’m a great gardener but because I’m not. I’m an amateur, a dirt gardener, one of those people who likes to get down on their knees and grub.”

Rea Duncan’s talk for the garden club on Tuesday will be about her favorite perennials. The program will take place in the first floor meeting room of C.H. Booth Library, 25 Main Street in Newtown.

Members of the club will meet for lunch and a business meeting at noon, and Mrs Duncan will speak at 1 pm. The public is invited to enjoy Mrs Duncan’s lecture along with club members, free of charge.
