Baseball Team Blanked By Barlow In Semis
The Newtown High School baseball team's winning ways ended with a 7-0 loss at top seed Joel Barlow of Redding in the SWC semifinals on May 21. The game was scoreless in the fourth as Newtown starter Wes Keayes shut down a potent Falcon lineup to start the game, holding Barlow hitless through three frames.
The Falcons batted around in the fourth and went through a few Nighthawk pitchers in the inning, plating all of its runs in the frame. Newtown relievers Jack Carta and Danny Leyva combined for 2.1 scoreless, two-hit innings. Barlow is unbeaten and is the top-ranked team in Class M for the state.
The Nighthawks, the No. 7 seed in the bracket, were riding a six-game winning streak (five victories to close out the regular slate followed by a 2-0 win at No. 2 New Fairfield in the SWC quarterfinals). NHS will look to bounce back in the State Tournament.
