Runners Enjoy Scenic Holcombe Hill 5K Course
Runners of all ages took part in a race - the Newtown Forest Association (NFA) and Newtown Cross Country 5K - on the scenic and challenging, hilly Holcombe Hill Wildlife Preserve on May 20. Kevin Hoyt, who dominates on pavement in other races, put his off-road running skills on display in this event, which benefits each of the organizations in its name.
Hoyt won the race in a time of 18:31. He was followed by Christopher Gamble in 20:55, Ethan Romano with a time of 23:45, Sarah Mawdsley, the fastest female finisher, who clocked in at 23:48, and Yasser Karim in 25:19.
There was even a canine who ran the race. Yogi ran with owner Amanda Leone, and Leone said as she made her way through the course that her dog was setting the pace.
Before the runners started, NFA Vice President Dr Aaron Coopersmith thanked the participants for their support of the NFA and encouraged nonmembers to join. He went over the the course layout and mentioned that blazes would guide the competitors along the way.
"If you get lost you really tried hard because it's hard to get lost," Dr Coopersmith said light-heartedly.
This was the second annual race, from which proceeds assist the fully volunteer NFA preserve its land, and the Newtown High girls' and boys' cross country program with season expenses.
"I think this is another good opportunity for us as an organization to reach out to the youth of Newtown, and engage them, and give them an opportunity to be outside," Newtown Forest Association President Bob Eckenrode said.
