Nighthawk Track Athletes Are Standouts At Loucks Games And Froshmore Meet

Newtown High School’s track teams are getting set for the South-West Conference Championships to take place at Bunnell High School in Stratford on Monday, May 22 at 3 pm. The runners, throwers, and jumpers finished up their postseason tune-ups with regular-season meets May 15 and 16. The boys won the Glenn D. Loucks Games, which took place in White Plains, N.Y., May 11-13. Newtown scored 33 points; three teams were second with 20 points

Soheib Dissa was second in the 3K steeplechase event with a time of 9:28.12. Kevin Murray placed second in the javelin throw with a 163-11, and Caleb Smith was fourth in the javelin event with a 158-00. Oliver Guzy came in third in the long jump with a leap of 22-09.50. Smith placed 11th in the discus event with a throw of 132-08. Dissa placed 11th in the mile run with a time of 4:16.76.

The freshmen and sophomores competed in the Froshmore Championships at Xavier High in Middletown on May 13, and Newtown’s girls and boys combined to win first place in the co-ed meet.

On the girls’ side, Aashni Shetty won the 100 hurdles, clocking in at 16.30; Shetty set the school record in this event with a time of 15.74 in the May 16 meet. Over the weekend, Shetty took first in the triple jump with a 34-07; Britta Petersen came in fourth in the triple jump with a 29-07. The 4x400 relay comprising Grace Lyons, Leah Morris, Hannah Stowe, and Shetty was first in 4:18.64.

Stowe took tenth in the 200 with a time of 28.59. In the 400, Lyons was third in 1:01.71, and Morris sixth in 1:03.33.

In the 1600, Anabelle Foley came in seventh in 6:09.51 and Britta Petersen was tenth in 6:18.58.

The 4x100 relay team of Stowe, Lola Kessler, Amanda Reyes, and Lyons was third in 53.23.

Reyes was fourth in the javelin with a throw of 71-04. Kessler came in third in the pole vault, clearing the bar at 8-06. Stowe placed second in the long jump with a 15-05.

For the boys, in the 100 meters, Grady Marks finished eighth in 12.07. Guzy was third in the 200 in 23.94 and Marks placed tenth in the 200 in 24.63. Elias Grady was fourth in the 400 in 54.11. Jayden Taylor placed second in the 110 hurdles in 16.36 and took seventh in the 300 hurdles in 44.98.

The 4x100 relay of Justyn Gonzalez, Guzy, Brady, and Marks was third in 45.65. The 4x400 relay of Brady, Trey Hoekenga, Taylor, and Guzy was third in 3:41.73. Gonzalez was eighth in the triple jump with a 39-06.
