The Chamber of Commerce of Newtown is sponsoring “The Great Newtown Shopping Spree Raffle,” which will reward a $3,000, $1,500, and $500 to each of three winners and at the same time support local businesses.

Tickets are $20 each and the winners will be able to spend their winnings at Newtown businesses or nonprofits to pay a bill, receive a gift card, make a donation, or open a line of credit.

“We want to support Newtown businesses of all types and also offer a substantial potential reward for participants in a fun way,” said Judith Miller, Chamber president. “Building interest in shopping, eating out, and doing business locally is what the Chamber does, and the raffle will encourage everyone in the region to visit Newtown.”

Winners can, for example, use the funds for a gym membership, an eye exam and new pair of glasses, grocery or retail purchases, joining the Community Center or paying for camp with the Parks & Rec Department, music lessons, home renovations, clothes, personal services, business equipment, even dental work or other medical needs. Checks distributed from the winners’ balances will only be authorized for Newtown-based providers, businesses, or Chamber member companies located outside of Newtown.

Tickets are on sale — online only — at bit.ly/newtownshoppingspreeraffle through June 24. The drawing will be streamed on Facebook Live at 6 pm on June 24.

Chamber Director Helen Brickfield conceived of the fundraiser and has plans for more exciting business programming and events in 2021.

“Our goal is to use this raffle as a foundation to continue to infuse our local businesses with traffic until we get through the effects of the pandemic,” Brickfield said. “COVID-19 hasn’t changed the Chamber mission and we hope to be even stronger in the coming year.”

The Chamber reports that the raffle would not be possible without the support of Litchfield Distillery, Batchers; Manzi Insurance of Newtown; the Newtown Economic and Community Development Commission; Dental Associates of Connecticut; Newtown Savings Bank; BD Provisions; i95, the Home of Rock N Roll; The WOLF 97.7, 97.3, 105.5; and eFriend Marketing.

Winners must spend the winnings in Newtown businesses and nonprofits that must have a tax ID, a Newtown address, or be a current Chamber member.
