Senior services for Newtown seniors are available at the Multipurpose Building on Riverside Road in Sandy Hook. The Senior Center is under the auspices of the Commission on Aging. The center is run by Senior Services Director Marilyn Place. For more information about programs offered at the Senior Center call 270-4310.

You may drop in at the Senior Center weekdays between 9 am and 4 pm. A hot meal is served at noon, for which you must reserve three days in advance.

Newtown has daily door-to-door minibus service Monday through Friday. Buses also run all day from the Senior Center to Sand Hill Plaza. On Fridays, the bus alternates between rides to Danbury Fair Mall and Berkshire Plaza in Danbury (to Walmart Route 6). Cost is 65¢ each way for the Sand Hill Plaza trip, 75¢ each way for out of town. Call 748-2511 TWO DAYS IN ADVANCE to book a ride and get the out-of-town Friday schedule.

Programs

*WE’VE GOT TALENT! is a fundraiser for Newtown Cultural Arts Commission. Auditions for musicians, vocalists, dancers, thespians, comedians, and other artists will take place on Thursday, May 27, 3 to 9 pm, at Reed Cafetorium. The event to be held early fall. *Recycled Chinese BINGO will be Wednesday, May 25, at 1 pm.

*Winners of the FREE SENIOR (65 and older) MAKEOVER. will be announced Thursday, May 27, at 1 pm One male and one female will receive an outfit, haircut from Ricci’s Academy, a Swiss skin care consult, and before and after photos.

*The Newtown Senior Center will be closed on Memorial Day, Monday, May 31.

Upcoming Programs

*Masonicare’s complimentary Lunch & Learn will be Friday, June 11, and the subject will be “Healthy Eating for Older Adults.”

*Music from the Heart with Ethel Kaufman will be Thursday, June 17, at 1 pm.

*A refresher AARP Driver Safety Program will be Thursday and Friday, June 24 and 25, from 12:30 am to 4:30 pm. You must attend both days. AARP members $12 and nonmembers are $14. Call to reserve your spot.

Day Trips

*On Thursday, June 10, a LOBSTERFEST at the Log Cabin in Holyoke, Mass. First stop, the Christmas Tree Shop, then to the Log Cabin for a boiled lobster feast, barbecued ribs and chicken, clam chowder and all the trimmings, followed by Jimmy Mazz performing a tribute to Englebert, Tom Jones and Lou Rawls. Depart 8 am; cost is $85.

*NEWPORT FLOWER SHOW on Saturday, June 26, at Rosecliff Mansion has an African theme. Tour the mansion and the grounds to see the magnificent floral arrangements and beautiful displays. Bring your lunch or grab some in the Wharf area. Depart at 7:30 am; cost is $58.

*Sugar, The Some Like It Hot Musical at Westchester Broadway Theatre on Thursday, July 1, will include lunch. Depart at 9:30 am; $88.

*The BOSTON POPS at Tanglewood on Sunday, July 18, at Tanglewood in Lenox, Mass. A luncheon buffet at the Morgan House will be served followed by the Boston Pops with special guest Arlo Guthrie. Depart at 8 am; cost is $118.

*ALL YOU CAN EAT Lobster buffet at Delaney House, Holyoke, Mass., on Thursday, July 22, along with a comedy and impressions show by Frank Cirell. Cost is $91. Come check out the great menu.

*Depart at 10:30 am on Thursday, August 12, to listen to BOBBY VINTON at the Aqua Turf. Lunch at Aqua Turf will be a family-style menu. Cost is $91.

*Depart 8 am on Wednesday, September 8, stop for coffee at The Great White Way and then off to the Bossa Nova for lunch. After lunch enjoy the music of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons in Jersey Boys on Broadway, with orchestra seating. Early registration is required. Cost is $190.

*YOGA classes are Monday and Thursday at 10:30 am.

*Billiards room; poker/card room; ping pong; and Wii bowling, golf, tennis, and baseball.

*Wii BOWLING, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday afternoons.

*MAKE CARDS FOR OUR TROOPS every Tuesday from 10 am to noon and 1 to 3 pm.

*BEGINNERS BRIDGE LESSONS on Wednesday, 10 am with Mary Matern.

*Iris card folding CRAFT CLASS every Thursday at 1 pm.

*MOVIE DAY are Fridays at 2 pm.

Monday: AM hatha yoga, exercise, PM chorus group, weaving, exercise, pinochle, movie.

Tuesday: AM cards for troops, line dancing; PM Tai Chi, pinochle, Wii bowling.

Wednesday: AM bridge, exercise; PM exercise.

Thursday: AM hatha yoga, pinochle; PM iris card folding craft class, Scrabble.

Friday: AM Mah Jongg, Quilts of Valor, exercise, chair yoga; PM knitting/crocheting, pinochle, movie.

Menu For Week Of

May 24–28

Monday: Spaghetti with meatballs, Italian blend vegetables, garlic bread, apple juice, seasonal fresh fruit.

Tuesday: Fish with Florentine sauce, brown rice pilaf, Riviera blend vegetables, seedless rye bread, Bartlett pear slices.

Wednesday: Oven fried chicken quarter, macaroni and cheese, garden peas, wheat dinner roll, mandarin oranges.

Thursday: Yankee pot roast with gravy, fresh smashed potato, green beans, whole wheat bread, birthday cake.

And for planning ahead —

Monday, May 31, Memorial Day:  Closed

Tuesday, June 1: Hungarian goulash served over egg noodles, fresh zucchini, oat bread, apricot halves.
