Pedestrian Struck By SUV

 Near Main Street Flagpole

By Andrew Gorosko

Police report that a local girl was injured midafternoon on Tuesday, when, while walking across Main Street just south of the flagpole intersection, she was struck by a southbound sport-utility vehicle.

Police said Angela Sobotka, 17, of 17 Sand Hill Road was attempting to cross from the west side of the street to the east side, as motorist Mary Duffy, 51, of 4 Currituck Road was driving a 2005 Toyota RAV-4 SUV southward on Main Street about 2:51 pm.

After Sobotka entered the street’s southbound lane on foot, the front end of the Toyota struck Sobotka, police said.

The Toyota stopped after the impact. Emergency service staffers found the girl lying on the pavement near the western curb, about 30 feet south of a crosswalk on Main Street.

After providing immediate medical care to Sobotka at the scene, Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps members transported her to Danbury Hospital for treatment of injuries. Sobotka was treated at the hospital and then released, according to a hospital spokeswoman.

Police said they are interviewing witnesses to the Main Street accident in their investigation. After the incident, police stopped traffic on Main Street for about 20 minutes to investigate.

It is unclear if Sobotka was in the crosswalk when the impact occurred, police said. Pedestrians who are in crosswalks have the right of way over vehicles that are traveling on roads.

Newtown Hook & Ladder firefighters responded to the accident.

On May 12, a 14-year-old male pedestrian was involved in vehicle-vs-pedestrian accident about 100 yards to the south on Main Street, in front of Booth Library.
