Klein Welcome Center Is Becoming A Reality
Klein Welcome Center
Is Becoming A Reality
The new Klein Welcome Center is under construction at Quinipet Camp and Retreat Center on Shelter Island, N.Y.
Built to honor the Reverend Sue and the late George Klein, longtime Newtown residents, it is a fitting recognition for their 42 years of leadership at Quinipetâs Family Camp, and their lifelong service and outreach with the United Methodist Church.
Rev Sue Klein has served as minister of music at Newtown United Methodist Church since 1982. She also provided music ministry for the inmates at Garner Correctional Institution for several years.
Teams of volunteers from NUMC have been working on the George and Sue Klein Welcome Center, with one of the April teams pictured here.
Quinipet Camp has been in operation for more than 60 years, providing summer camp, retreat opportunities, and environmental education. Original Lodges, dating back as far as 1882, provides Quinipet recognition as a New York State Historic Property.
The campâs Seymour House took a one mile ârideâ in September 2009, being relocated to within the camp property and now stands next to the dining hall and is being refurbished into the Klein Welcome Center. The new finished building, including the basement level and the ground floor level, will be approximately 2,500 square feet.
The Klein Welcome Center will provide three essential functions for Quinipet Camp and Retreat Center: the main check-in location and creation of a camp center, it will be the location of the camp infirmary and living quarters for the camp nurse, and it will offer centralized, accessible office space for the staff.
The camp continues to fundraise and receive donations for the project. Those who would like to make a monetary gift to this project can send a check payable to Conference Camping Capital Campaign, with Welcome Center Project on the memo line, to Quinipet Camp and Retreat Center, PO Box 549, Shelter Island Heights NY 11965.
