Former Danbury Physical Education Teacher
Kenneth B. Smith, Jr, 67, beloved husband of Bonnie (Mayberry) Smith of Heritage Village, Southbury, and previously of Newtown, died May 15, in Danbury Hospital. He was born in Waterbury, September 21, 1942, a son of the late Kenneth B. Smith, Sr, and Barbara (Hebert) Smith.
Mr Smith was raised in Newtown and was a graduate of Newtown High School, Class of 1960. He graduated from Southern Connecticut State University in 1964.
Until his retirement in 2000, Mr Smith was a physical education teacher at Rogers Park Junior High, and the varsity basketball coach at Danbury High School for 11 years, winning a State Championship in 1989 and finishing runner up in 1990.
He moved to Southbury in 2006 and was a member of the Pomperaug Golf Club.
In addition to his wife, survivors include a daughter, Teri Smith Fernand and her husband, Mark, of Newtown; a son, Scott Smith and his wife, Hollie, of Austin, Texas; three siblings; and three grandchildren.
A memorial service was scheduled for Thursday, May 20, at 7 pm, in the Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main Street, Newtown, with calling hours were scheduled from 5 to 7.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Danbury Hospital Development Fund/Oncology Services, 24 Hospital Avenue, Danbury CT 06810, or the Newtown High School Athletic Department, 12 Berkshire Road, Newtown CT 06470.
