Households Are Happier With Wireless Service, Rapidly Cutting Landlines
WASHINGTON (AP) â One in four households has a cellphone but no traditional landlines, a trend led by the young and the poor that is showing no sign of abating. And a growing number of wireless phone users are happier with their service, a separate study released this week shows.
The 25 percent of household users who had only a mobile phone in the last half of 2009 was up two percentage points from the first half of the year, according to data reported May 12 by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Spotlighting how steadily peopleâs telephone habits are evolving, in the beginning of 2006 just 11 percent of homes had only a cell.
The move away from landlines â just 15 percent of households have a traditional phone and no cell phone, about half the rate of 2006 â is having a widespread effect. It affects everything from how telephone companies stay profitable to how polling firms and government agencies gather data to how 911 service providers locate people in need of help.
Staying steady is the nearly six in ten share of households with both landline and cell service. That figure has essentially remained constant since the beginning of 2007.
Stephen Blumberg, a senior scientist at the CDC and an author of the report, said he believes the tough economic times are having little effect on the switch from landlines to cells. One possible exception â a sharp increase in the number of children from cell-only households, which he said partly reflects a growing number of children living in rented housing as their familiesâ homes were foreclosed.
Of those living below the federal poverty level of about $22,000 a year for a family of four, 36 percent have only cellphones. Twenty-nine percent of the near-poor â between the poverty level and $44,000 annually for a family of four â are cell only, as are 20 percent of those with higher incomes. The percentages in each income group have been growing steadily.
Younger people are leading the way to a cell-only world. More than a third of people under age 35 â including about half of those age 25 to 29 â have only cellphones. The figure drops steadily at age 35 and after, with only about one in 20 people age 65 and older relying only on mobile service.
The report also found that:
*63 percent of adults living with an unrelated adult but without children had only cells, nearly four times the rate for related adults without children.
*More than four in ten renters had only cells, about triple the rate for homeowners.
*15 percent of adults in the Northeast had only cell phones, while the figure for those in other parts of the country ranged from 22 to 26 percent.
*30 percent of Hispanics had only mobile phones, compared with 25 percent of non-Hispanic blacks and 21 percent of non-Hispanic whites.
The data was compiled by the National Health Interview Survey, which is conducted by the CDC. The latest survey involved in-person interviews with members of 21,375 households conducted from July through December 2009.
In related news, consumers say they are more satisfied than ever with their cell phone service, according to survey published May 18.
The American Customer Satisfaction Index for cell phone service was 72 on a 100-point scale in the first quarter this year. That rose three points from last year and is the highest grade since the survey started looking at wireless in 2004.
The financial reports of the major wireless carriers bear this out. Most of them say the number of subscribers canceling service every month has declined.
The only major carrier that demonstrated a big improvement from last yearâs survey was Sprint Nextel Corp. The company has seen subscribers flee for several years, but it has made big efforts to improve customer service.
Those efforts appear to be bearing fruit, as its score rose from 63 to 70. It posted another seven-point increase the year before. Sprintâs subscriber losses have slowed in the last six months.
Sprintâs customer satisfaction score is now just above AT&Tâs 69. Both Verizon Wireless and T-Mobile USA are at 73. However, the differences between all four nationwide carriers are now within the margin of error for an individual company, at plus or minus three points.
The margin of error for the industrywide index is plus or minus one point.
The survey was developed by the University of Michigan but is now run by a private company, ACSI LLC. It surveyed about 11,000 households for the first-quarter report.
