Hawks’ Travel Softball Team Beats Milford 11-3

In their second outing of the year, the 12U Hawks softball team defeated rival Milford 11-3, avenging their loss in the state championship game last year.

The Hawks were a little shaky in the top of the first inning, giving up two runs on miscues in the field.

Milford’s lead was short-lived as the Hawks scored five runs in the bottom of the inning on hard hit ground balls, walks and aggressive base running to take a three-run lead after the first.

Newtown tacked on more runs in each inning while holding Milford to just one more run in the remainder of the game; forcing an early, run-rule end to the game.

Caitlyn Linden led the Hawks with a triple, two doubles and four runs scored. Linden also partnered with Haley Ryan to tag out a runner trying to stretch a single into a double. Ryan had cut off a line drive single in right center field and made a strong, accurate throw to Linden at second to get the out.

Also contributing at the plate for the Hawks were Brianna Baranowski with a double, Katie Reilly and Ryan with singles, and Katie Laaksonen with a single and two RBI. Sydney DiMartino and Reilly made nice defensive plays in the infield.

The Hawks will play a double header on Sunday, May 23 against the Fairfield Lights.
