Saturday Morning On Al’s Trail

Pat Barkman, Al’s Trail coordinator, has scheduled a workday on Saturday, May 22, from 9 am to noon, rain or shine. She is looking for any and all helpers willing to lend a hand in support of the four Al’s Trail leaders.

Leader Leon Barkman will work the northern terminus of the trail from Hanover Road where the Pond Brook Bridge is located (next to the boat launch) down to Albert’s Hill Road. Those who want to help on that portion of the trail need to bring hammers, an apron with big pockets to hold nails, any aluminum nails they want to get rid of that are between one-and-a-half to two inches long, water, a midmorning snack, and good hiking boots or shoes. Some cars will have to be left at the Albert’s Hill end of the trail.

Leader Harlan Jessup needs three able-bodied workers at the end of Commerce Road (which is past the post office off Church Hill Road) meeting at the cul-de-sac. Parking is next to the sewage treatment plant. This crew will be moving large rocks along the trail.

Leader Frank Gardner of the Lions Club and Pat Barkman will also lead work parties meeting at the end of Commerce Road at the cul-de-sac for small rock placement, removal of invasive plant species, trail marking, and side hilling. For this detail, bring shovels, pruners, clippers, loppers, and hammers.

After a full morning, all workers will meet at the Sandy Hook Diner for lunch. Anyone planning to come should call Pat Barkman at 426-8949.
