Summer Program For Retired Professionals
FAIRFIELD â University College at Fairfield University invites retired professionals to enjoy a thought-provoking week on the philosophy of old age, the ethics of modern biological research, and the global and national implications of US foreign policy.
The âSummer Institute for Retired Professionals,â which is open to anyone age 55 or older, will run from Monday, June 7, through Friday, June 11, on the campus at Fairfield University. The weeklong institute, which costs $165, will comprise three lectures each day for five days. Attendees will wrap up the week at a dinner on Thursday, June 10, at 5:30 pm.
Each day will begin with a class on the âPhilosophy of Old Age from the Pre-Socratics to the Renaissance,â from 9 to 10:30 am by King Dykeman, PhD, associate professor of philosophy.
The religious, theological, and ethical questions raised by advances in modern biological research will be discussed in âGod and Modern Biologyâ by Glen Sauer, PhD, assistant professor of biology, from 11 am to 12:30 pm.
Politics professor Edward Dew, PhD, will wrap up each day from 1:30 to 3 pm with a look at US foreign policy, and how it is shaped by Americaâs role in the world. âUS Foreign Policy from the Cold War to the Present Day,â will run from 1:30 to 3 pm.
Coffee, tea, and dessert will be served during luncheon breaks throughout the week. Members are encouraged to bring brown bag lunchs, or eat at Jazzmanâs Café in the Barone Campus Center.
