Girls' Track Team Races To Title, Boys Second
Newtown High School's girls' track and field team won the South-West Conference Championship at Bethel High on May 20. The NHS boys placed second as a team.
The girls scored 123.5 points to edge second-place Joel Barlow of Redding which tallied 118.75. On the boys' side, host Bethel was tops with185.5; NHS scored 107. Both Nighthawk squads had standout individual and relay performances.
The girls used their depth to take the overall title and had two first-place results. Grace Lyons won the 400 meter event in a time of 57.05 and Aashni Shetty took first in the 100 hurdles in 15.60.
In the boys' competition, Newtown was led by a relay and jumper. The 4x100 relay team of Gabriel Appiah, Grady Marks, Aydyn Gonzalez, and Hayden Bobowick took first with a time of 42.72. Dominic Simpri won the high jump, clearing the bar at 6-foot-2.
