School Board Recognizes Top NHS Students

By Eliza Hallabeck

Newtown High School’s top students were recognized on Tuesday, May 17, at the Board of Education’s meeting.

Newtown High School Principal Charles Dumais introduced Drew Robinson and Brian Reed of the Class of 2011 as the valedictorian and salutatorian, respectively.

“This is not about one grade or one course,” said Mr Dumais, standing before the Board of Education and members of the audience with Brian and Drew. “This is about four-years-plus of doing the best academically of anybody at Newtown High School.”

(A full profile of the two students will appear in a future edition of The Newtown Bee.)

“This has a lot to do with family and parents,” said Mr Dumais, speaking about the two boys’ accomplishments. “This has a lot to do with perseverance.”

At a school with roughly 450 students in each graduating class, Mr Dumais said being the top two students is quite an achievement.

“Congratulations to all of our award winners tonight,” said Board of Education Chair William Hart.

Brian Reed was also named as a CABE Student Leadership Award Winner along with NHS student Megan Preis by Superintendent of Schools Janet Robinson at the board meeting.

Dr Robinson also named Matthew Genovese as the CAPSS Superintendent’s Student Award Winner for the 2010-11 academic year.
