Newtown Lightning 8, Newtown 15U All-Stars 4: The Lightning jumped out to a 4-0 first-inning lead and never fell behind at Fairfield Hills Field. Ben Stoller led the victors with four runs scored, four stolen bases, a double and a single, and teammates Michael Herring and James Rebman each had hit two singles. The Lightning used wood bats, while the gritty 15U All-Stars swung metal bats. The Lightning pounded out 11 hits — seven more than the All-Stars. The Newtown 15U team battled the entire game, refusing to fold under the relentless pressure of the Lightning offense. The All-Stars were led by catcher Julian Dunn, who rapped two singles and threw out two base stealers. Jack Lago laced a double down the left field line, and Troy Frangione dropped a perfect bunt single for the Stars’ other two hits. Lightning pitcher Ryan O’Keefe got the win, yielding one run and striking out two during the first two innings. Lightning reliever John Lebinski hurled two shutout innings, allowing one hit, striking out two and walking none.

Amity 7, Newtown Lightning 4: Amity rebounded from a 4-1 deficit after three innings to move into first place — a half game ahead of Newtown in the Connecticut Senior Baseball League. In the first inning of the all-wood-bat game at Fairfield Hills Field, Newtown lead-off batter Will Arndt crushed a long double down the left field line, Ben Stoller ripped a ball that was booted for an error by the third baseman, and Dan Milot walked to load the bases. Alex Saviano lined an RBI single to center to score Arndt, and John Lebinski slapped an RBI groundout to score Stoller. Newtown scored two more in the second inning. Brandon Cooper walked; Ryan O’Keefe reached on an error; James Rebman blooped an RBI single to center; Nicky Sajovic walked, and Ryan Daignault delivered an RBI grounder to second. Amity reliever Nile Dammando shut out Newtown the rest of the game. Relying mainly on a fastball with movement, Dammando struck out ten Newtown batters over five innings, yielding no runs and just two singles to Lebinski and Eric Sutton. Alex Saviano pitched the first four innings for Newtown, exiting with a 4-3 lead. Saviano yielded three hits, four walks and just one earned run, and struck out three. Shortstop Arndt recorded the game’s only double play, gobbling up a grounder, stepping on second and firing a strike to first baseman Stoller.

Southbury 12, Newtown Lightning 7: Southbury erupted for six third-inning runs and took advantage of Newtown’s sloppy defense Saturday at Fairfield Hills Field. Trailing 8-1 in the third inning, Newtown mounted a brief comeback. Ben Stoller crushed a long two-RBI triple over the left fielder’s head to score Ryan Daignault, who had reached base after being hit by a pitch, and Brandon Cooper, who had walked. Stoller scored on a wild pitch to narrow the deficit to 8-4. But Southbury scored twice in the fourth inning and never was threatened again. In the fifth inning, Cooper blasted a double over the right fielder’s head, and Stoller again brought him home by lining an RBI single to left field. Cooper had a strong offensive game with three hits, and teammate James Rebman smacked two singles.
