The Newtown Hawks U12 Softball team opened its season by attending the Shock to the System Tournament in Wallingford during the weekend of May 14-15. The Hawks seeded eighth after the first day of play, a respectable standing in a field of 16 teams. Unfortunately due to the weather, all games were canceled on Sunday, so the final standings were a result of only one day of play. The Hawks came on strong during their first game and beat Xtreme Chaos 7-6. The offense was led by Caitlyn Linden, who had a home run her first time at bat, and then followed with a triple. Lindenâs solid batting performance resulted in 4 RBIs. Haley Ryan went 3 for 3 with singles; while Lauren Wilcox added her own two singles and one RBI. Kelly Merrick and Tegan Doherty each contributed a single. The Hawks defense remained strong throughout the game and Shannon Lynch made a nice catch in right field during the third inning; Wilcox pitched the entire game and struck out 13 batters.
The Hawks then came up against one of the top teams in the region, Empire Huskies Black, and unfortunately the tides were turned and the Hawks were defeated. The Hawks made a valiant effort both offensively and defensively. In the last game of the day, the Hawks regained their momentum and went on to beat Valley Fusion 7-5. Haley Ryan and Lauren Wilcox had two singles apiece, Tegan Doherty and Shannon Lynch each contributed a single and Kelly Merrick hit a triple. Wilcox was back on the mound for the game and struck out seven batters, while Merrick and Doherty gave strong performances on first and second base.
The Hawks thank their sponsors, WellBaskets.com, Poland Spring Direct, and Newtown Ice Cream Shop.
