Newtown Savings Bank Helps ETH Seats Project

Newtown Savings Bank made a contribution to the Edmond Town Hall Seats Project, bringing the total raised so far to more than $48,000.

Replacing the 411 seats on the main floor of the theater will cost more than $120,000. The renovation project is being sponsored by the Newtown Lions Club as a tercentennial project.

“Lending a helping hand to our community has always been an important role of the Newtown Savings Bank,” said Brian Amey, NSB assistant treasurer and manager of the headquarters branch on Main Street.

“This will be a lasting memorial of the tercentennial year,” said Gordon Williams, project chairman. “There has been no money in the town budget for this project. The 411 downstairs seats are in such disrepair, [and are ] held together, in some cases, by bailing wire and duck tape.”

The cost of each seat is $300. This pays for the new seat, refurbishing the floor under the seat, and an inscription plaque on the back that includes the name of the donor.

So far, 113 seats have been sold, for $33,900, but a total of $48,000 has been raised because some donors contribute less than the $300 required for one seat.

“Groups like the Newtown Junior Women’s Club have held fundraisers for the seats program and a number of people have not bought a seat but have contributed,” Mr Williams said. “Although we want to sell all the seats, all donations, big and small, are appreciated.”

Donations are tax deductible. Checks should be made out to the Edmond Town Hall Board of Managers with the words “Newtown Seats Program” in the memo line. Send to: Newtown Lions Club, Attn Gordon Williams, PO Box 218, Newtown 06470. Anyone who has questions should contact Mr Williams at 426-6443.
