An Inspiring Event

To the Editor:

Yesterday I attended one of the most spectacular events of the tercentennial so far — “Newtown Notables: Gone But Not Forgotten.” As the town historian, I am very familiar with the persons whose ghosts told us their story in the Village Cemetery, but I have never had Newtown personalities come to life as they did Saturday. There were several teary moments when I heard words that I know those people had spoken in life and it took no imagination at all to know that the spirit of the Notable buried there was speaking in the voice of the “living ghost.” It was one of the most inspiring events I have ever attended.

I wish to thank Patty Graves (Yes, her name really is Graves) who conceived this tour and who put it together so well. You have done a great service to the town and the tercentennial. I also thank all of the ten “ghosts” for their truly incredible performances... or was it a performance? Each one of you captured the spirit of the deceased and brought him/her back to life, if only for a few moments.

I feel very sorry to those who missed this event and hope that for their sake there may be a repeat tour to the Village Cemetery in the near future.
