Update, on Saturday, May 19, it was announced that the SWC tourney baseball quarterfinals and semifinals will be played the same day, Wednesday, May 23, beginning at 2 pm. On Sunday, May 20, the regular-season softball and baseball games between Newtown and Masuk, were postponed until the next day. Newtown will host both games, on Monday, May 21, beginning at 4 pm. The changes are reflected below in the article which originally was posted on Saturday.

Aftermath of the abrupt but impactful May 15 storm has left area high school sports teams playing the waiting game.

Newtown High School's softball and baseball teams are to play contests against Masuk of Monroe on Monday, May 21, at 4 pm. The games were originally to have been played the day of the storm, then moved to Sunday, May 20 before the threat of thunderstorms caused another change.

South-West Conference tournament action was to begin with lacrosse matchups on Thursday, May 17, and baseball and softball battles two days later, but downed trees and wires, and loss of power for many resulted in school cancellation May 16-18, thus postponing all school activities. A wet Saturday meant no makeups for baseball and softball, creating the unusual reschedule attempt date of Sunday before that fell through.

SWC school athletic directors met on Friday, May 18, and reset the conference tourney schedule.

There will be no tourney competitions on Monday, May 21, giving teams a day to practice and prepare for postseason, as well as squeeze in regular-season games that were postponed.

Newtown High will host girls' and boys' lacrosse quarterfinals on Tuesday, May 22. The boys, seeded second, are slated to host No. 7 Brookfield at 7 pm. The girls will likely host an opponent to be determined at 4:30 pm but the matchup hinges on regular-season games to be played. Softball quarterfinals are still slated for Tuesday at a time to be determined. Newtown's softball team is battling Masuk for the top spot in the conference.

On Wednesday, May 23, the top-seeded baseball team is to host a quarterfinal-round contest at 2 pm. Additionally, with wins, the softball and baseball teams would play semifinal games that same evening. Softball semis will be held at Stratford's DeLuca Field, beginning at 5 or 7 pm. The baseball semis will take place at either Pender's Field in Stratford or Bethel High at 7 pm, meaning the sluggers could have a two-town, two-round twin bill. Also on Wednesday, the lacrosse semis will be hosted by the higher seeds. With quarterfinal-round victories, both of Newtown's lacrosse teams will host games at times to be determined.

The track and field championships, initially to be held Monday, have been moved to Wednesday, May 23 at the same location, Bunnell High in Stratford, beginning at 4 pm.

The girls' and boys' individual tennis tournaments were bumped a day and rescheduled for Tuesday, May 22 and Wednesday, May 23 (with Thursday, May 24 reserved as a possible date to complete matches); the girls at Barlow and boys at Wolfe Park in Monroe, beginning at 3 pm both days.

Between girls' and boys' track and field, baseball, softball, lacrosse, and girls' and boys' tennis, Newtown High could have as many as nine competitions in six locations in the same afternoon and evening on Wednesday.

Seedings for some of the teams remain up in the air until completion of regular-season games.

The softball and baseball championships are to be played on Thursday, May 24, both beginning at 7 pm: Baseball at Pender's or Bethel, and softball at DeLuca.

Lacrosse championships are slated for Friday, May 25, and both are to unfold on the turf at New Milford High with the girls' game at 4:30 pm and the boys playing at 7 pm.

Already on the schedule for Friday, May 25, is the boys' volleyball championship; No. 1 Newtown will host No. 2 Joel Barlow of Redding at 6 pm.

Girls' and boys' golf championships, as originally planned, will take place on Tuesday, May 29, the girls at Brownson Country Club in Shelton at 8 am and the boys at Ridgewood Country Club in Danbury at 8:30 am.
