To the Editor:

As the proud mom of a daughter who teaches 8th grade science in the public school I am pleased to see signs around town which proclaim “We Love Teachers.”

I started to wonder if, as a country, we took that love and turned it into action.

One way to do that would be to trust and respect their professional opinions when it comes to what reading material is available to students.

Another would be to deal with gun violence as the public health issue that it is and stop asking our teachers to be “human shields” for students as quoted in last week’s Bee.

Finally, what if we paid them a salary which would allow them to live in the communities they teach in.
