Safety Should Prevail On Police Responses

The following letter has been received for publication in The Newtown Bee:

Dear Citizens of Newtown:

On April 13 I was driving on Route 25 toward Monroe when I was approached by a police [SUV] in my lane that was responding to an emergency call. As you can see from the video dash cam available from Chief David Kullgren, many cars before me were driven to the right of the road.

There are several persons in authority you must contact for immediate action. Even though you will be told that legislation protects that decision, and 40 policemen from prosecution, it is a grievously wrong law.

These people can forbid any officer NOW, and should do so: First Selectman Rosenthal at 203-270-4201; Chief of Police Kullgren at 203-270-4255, and Commissioner of Police Joel Faxon at the same number as Chief Kullgren. I have not had anybody answer my call from Senator Tony Hwang’s office.

I ask with such a heavy heart ... support what I ask for and let these men know we are expecting quick attention. Changing the legislation takes a long time. Let the leaders know we will be behind their compassionate decision.

Act now, people — and save us from tragic consequences!

Sincerely,

Kate Twohy

Newtown
