C.H. Booth Library will sponsor two screenings of The Maltese Falcon (1941) on Thursday, May 31, at 2 and 7 pm, in the theater of Edmond Town Hall, 45 Main Street.

Tickets are $3, and the matinee will be shown with captions for the benefit of the hearing impaired.

One week prior, on Thursday, May 24 at 7 pm, the library will host Mark J. Schenker, senior associate dean of Yale College, who will present a talk on film noir, with a special focus on The Maltese Falcon.

"Film Noir" is a term coined by French critic Nino Frank in the mid-1940s, but it was not widely accepted until the 1970s, when it was applied to scores of major and minor Hollywood films of the 1940s and 1950s. Schenker will discuss how the genre, a distinctly American art form, is the product of various cultural forces in the US and Europe, including the Great Depression and WWII.

Patrons will have a chance to win a modern graphic poster of the film, donated by the artist, Michael Gelén of Inkwell Studios, and their own copy of the book.

The Someday Cinema Series will continue on Sunday, June 24, with screenings of Jaws. Visit tiny.cc/somedaycinema2018 for up-to-date details on the entire series.fb.me/somedaycinemaseries or
