Hawk Volleyball Team Stuns Falcons, Hands Rivals First Loss Of Campaign

Newtown High School’s boys’ volleyball team avenged an April 10 four-set loss to South-West Conference rival Joel Barlow of Redding by turning the tables on the visiting Falcons in a 3-1 (25-15, 18-25, 25-22, 25-18) win on May 14. This was Barlow’s first loss of the spring.

Nate Twitchell racked up 20 kills to go along with six digs, one block, and a pair of aces. Charlie Hanson logged nine kills, 15 digs, one block, and five aces; Warner Bacon had nine kills, two digs, and one ace; Cole Sgagliardich had three kills and four blocks; A.J. Zatulskis posted four kills, six digs, one block, and a trio of aces; Eli Sullivan had three digs; and Matt Tomaj compiled 45 assists, one kill, and six digs.

In its previous match, the day before, Newtown beat visiting Kolbe Cathedral of Bridgeport in a hard-fought three-setter, with scores of 28-26, 25-23, and 25-22, Charlie logged 16 kills, 11 digs, three blocks, and one ace. Zatulskis had five kills, three digs, and five aces; Twitchell recorded two kills, four digs, and two blocks; Sgagliardich had four kills, two blocks, and a dig; Bacon logged 13 kills; Sullivan had four digs and two aces; Noel McLeod had three digs and one block; and Tomaj had 40 assists.

Newtown played consecutive matches against nonconference foes following up a 3-0 (25-17, 25-18, 25-13) setback at home to Cheshire on May 9 with a 3-0 (25-2, 25-11, 25-15) win over host Daniel Hand of Madison on May 11. Against Hand, Zatulskis had three kills, 13 aces, and one dig; Tomaj had four kills and 33 assists; Twitchell had 11 kills and six aces; Sullivan logged five digs and four aces; Bacon had three kills; and Tim Via and Max McCarthy both had kills.

The Nighthawks, following Wednesday’s scheduled visit to Pomperaug of Southbury close out the regular season with a Friday, May 17 home match with Masuk of Monroe at 6 pm and a Monday, May 20, visit to Brookfield at 3:30 pm.
