Heading into their final regular season meet, the Nighthawks knew they didn’t have much of a shot against Joel Barlow (10-2 at the time) but figured they had a really good shot at both New Fairfield (5-7) and Stratford (12-4).

Well . . .

The ‘Hawks did indeed have a shot against Stratford, despite the Red Devils’ impressive record, earning a 751/2  - 651/2  victory, but the girls then dropped a tough, 71-70, loss to New Fairfield. That, coupled with a 87-54 loss to Joel Barlow, put the ‘Hawks at 7-8 on the season with the South-West Conference championship meet coming up on Monday at Joel Barlow High School in Redding.

Still – with the enormous graduation losses suffered by the ‘Hawks after the completion of their second consecutive SWC championship in 1999 – a 7-8 record is not bad for a team on the mend.

Despite the two losses, the ‘Hawks got some outstanding performances on Monday. As could be expected, Janelle Tracy once again swept the 100- and 200-meter dash events with times of 12.8 and 26.7, respectively. Tracy has not yet been defeated in either event this season and should manage to take home individual titles in both next week.

And then there was Caitlin Elf, who finished first in the 400 meters (1:00.1), and Alison Frobey, who finished first in the 800 meters (2:32), as the ‘Hawks other top runners. Frobey added a second-place finish of 1:02.5 in the 400 meters while Cara Delvecchio came in second in 300 meter hurdles (51.2) and Erin Kostecki came in second in the 1,600 meters (5:50) and third in the 3,200 meters (13:02).

Newtown’s 4x100 relay team of Delvecchio, Frobey, Elf and Tracy also finished first with a 52.1 mark, over two seconds ahead of Joel Barlow and Stratford and three seconds ahead of New Fairfield. The 4x400 and 4x800 relay teams each took second.

Elf turned in the Nighthawks’ best performance in the field events, taking third in the long jump at 13-113/4 .
