Nighthawk Lacrosse Teams Roll In Postseason Openers
Newtown High School’s girls’ and boys’ lacrosse teams, both seeded second in their South-West Conference tournaments, won their postseason openers in convincing fashion, at Blue & Gold Stadium on May 16.
The girls beat Weston 12-4 and the boys toppled Bethel 20-3; both opponents were No. 7 seeds.
Newtown’s girls will host a semifinal contest on Monday, May 20, and the boys will host their semifinal game on Tuesday, May 21 (opponents to be determined).
In a regular-season battle, the girls edged host Weston 9-8. The rematch was not nearly as close in the end, although Weston hung around for much of the contest.
Rylee Harrell scored her first of three goals less than a minute into the tilt. Lu Hage scored the first of her two, both on free possession opportunities, just under five minutes in for a 2-0 lead.
The score remained the same for six-plus minutes until Julia Gerace got the first of her three tallies. Keeley Kortze scored the first of her two goals late in the half for a 4-0 lead at intermission.
Harrell scored again early in the second half for a 5-0 cushion.
Weston got on the scoreboard 3:10 into the half, but Harrell answered a little over a minute later.
After a Weston goal, Shea Murphy pushed Newtown’s advantage back to five at 7-2.
Consecutive Weston tallies, just 36 seconds apart, made things interesting at 7-4 with 11:23 left. Weston got possession off the ensuing draw but was thwarted by Newtown’s defense.
Yellow cards piled up on Weston and after the team’s fourth infraction the visitors had to play shorthanded for the remainder of the game. The Nighthawks capitalized and sealed the win with five unanswered tallies.
Ali Kelleher finished with a goal and an assist, and Murphy and Kortze both had assists.
Nighthawks goaltender Tess Davenport made a trio of saves, including one to help stop Weston’s momentum with the score 7-4.
In the boys’ team triumph, Tucker Garrity had six goals and three assists, Aiden Coleman netted four goals and had two assists, Brennan Mayer tallied three goals and three assists, and Andre Sokk had two goals and two assists.
Tanner Trede scored twice, Brendan Manka recorded a goal and two assist, Brett Pierce and Colin Breslin each scored twice, and Kyle Sullivan had an assist.
