After running the conference playoff table as the seventh seed in last year's South-West Conference title run, Newtown High School's baseball team enters into this year's SWC playoffs as the top seed.

The Nighthawks pushed their winning streak to an ultra-impressive nine games heading into the regular-season finale, against Masuk of Monroe. The game was postponed two days in a row due to the storm on Tuesday.

Newtown carries an overall record of 15-4 and conference mark of 11-1 into the contest. The playoffs begin with SWC quarterfinal-round action on Saturday, May 19.

Newtown clobbered host Kolbe Cathedral 14-1 in a five-inning, mercy-rule effort at Bridgeport's Veteran's Park on May 9. The Hawks blanked visiting Pomperaug of Southbury 5-0 the next day, then out-slugged host Stratford 12-8 on May 14.

The Hawks have reached double digits six times this spring. Against Kolbe, Cole Demerjian drove in half of Newtown's runs. He had a double, triple, and single, knocked in seven, and scored twice. Sam Smith had a hit and three runs batted in, and Josh Taylor had two hits and two RBI. Harry Eppers collected three hits and scored three runs.

Taylor took the mound and took advantage of all of this offensive support, but proved not to need much; he allowed one earned run on two hits, walked one, and fanned six batters.

Against Pomperaug, the strong pitching continued as Kyle Roche threw a three-hitter with eight strikeouts and no walks.

Eppers had three hits, including a double, and knocked in two. Eugene Citrano and Luke Melillo both had triples and drove in runs, and Rob Murray added a hit and RBI.

In the win over Stratford, the Hawks erupted for seven runs in the third inning. Todd Petersen led the effort with a home run, double, single, two RBI, and two runs scored. Ben Harrison had three hits, including a pair of triples, an RBI, and scored three runs. Citrano doubled, tripled, drove in three, and scored twice. Eppers had two hits and two runs batted in; Murray doubled and singled, drove in one, and scored a run; and Jack Miller added a hit and two RBI.
