Both of Newtown High School’s lacrosse teams were in action on May 14 and 16. The Nighthawk squads won a combined three of four contests.

The girls, coming off a 12-9 win over visiting South-West Conference foe Immaculate of Danbury, on May 14, dropped a 17-7 decision to visiting nonconference opponent Simsbury, on May 16. Newtown’s boys’ team, after its most lopsided game of the spring – a 21-5 triumph at Immaculate – edged host Staples of Westport 7-6 in a nonconference clash, two days later. The boys improved to 11-4 overall and have had eight one-goal nail-biters.

In their win over Immaculate, the girls were led by Charli Condon and Julia Shrugrue with three goals each, and Kat Jennings and Brianna Sclafani with two net-finders apiece. Goaltender Lizzi Hodge made 11 saves. The Hawks got three goals from Shugrue and two off the stick of Lauren Carrino in the setback to Simsbury.

Newtown’s girls’ team visit Wilton on May 18 for a 6 pm game, and caps off the regular season with a road game against Joel Barlow of Redding at 6:30 pm the next evening. The Hawks are in contention for the fifth or sixth spot in the upcoming six-team conference playoffs.

Matt Meyers netted six goals, Bubba Condon and Conrad Morris both had three, and Mark Urso, Brad Kretz, and David Anderson all scored twice in the 21-goal outburst. Urso won 20 of 24 faceoffs, and Christian Hoffman won four of five draws.

Deegan Beauchemin, with four goals, was Newtown’s top scorer in the win at Staples. Jared Pearson, Condon, and Kretz also hit the net. Goalie Jon Rospenda made 13 stops.

The boys conclude the regular slate on May 18 when Barlow visits Blue & Gold Stadium for a 7 pm start. The Hawks, Barlow, and New Milford are all vying for the top seed in the SWC tournament bracket.

Charli Condon, left, runs with the ball during Newtown's 17-7 loss to visiting Simsbury, on May 16. Condon had three goals in her team's 12-9 win over Immaculate two days earlier.
