Two Garner Inmates Arrested On
Assault Charges
State police report two separate criminal cases at the stateâs high-security Garner Correctional Institution on Nunnawauk Road in which they arrested two inmates on assault charges following incidents involving correction officers.
State police said that on the evening of May 10, inmate Alex Velez, 31, was being escorted by two correction officers from the showers back to his prison cell, when, as one of the two officers attempted to remove Velezâs handcuffs, Velez tried to pull away from the officer. The correction officer received hand and arm injuries in the incident, state police said.
Velez was charged with assault on public safety personnel and with refusal to be fingerprinted. He was scheduled for arraignment on the charges on May 12 in Danbury Superior Court.
Velez is a prisoner in Garner serving a five-year term on a drug sales conviction.
In a separate incident, Garner inmate Troy Jaynes, 39, allegedly spat in the face of a correction officer, state police said. State police learned of the incident on the afternoon of May 8.
After investigating, state police charged Jaynes with assault on public safety personnel and with refusal to be fingerprinted.
Jaynes was scheduled for a court appearance on the charges on May 9.
Jaynes is serving a 50-year sentence in Garner on a murder conviction.
