Nighthawk Tennis Teams Heat Up

Newtown High Schoolâs boysâ and girlsâ tennis teams have played well as the regular season winded down this month.
The boys, in earning their second straight 7-0 triumph, won their fifth consecutive match, besting Brookfield on the road on Tuesday. The boys improved to 11-3 (8-3 in South-West Conference play) heading into the regular season finale clash with Masuk this week.
The girls, meanwhile, had won four straight following a 5-2 win over Brookfield at home on Tuesday to improve to 9-5 heading into their season finale with Masuk. Both NHS teams are on top of their games and were in contention for SWC playoff berths in the middle of this week.
The boys began their winning streak with a 5-2 win over Bethel on May 5, then topped Bunnell 6-1 on May 7 and edged New Fairfield 4-3 on May 8. They blanked Immaculate 7-0 before repeating the shutout feat at Brookfield.
In their win over Brookfield, the results were as follows:
Singles: No. 1: Mario Roehrs defeated Chris Turner 6-2, 6-3. No. 2 Even Batzer defeated Jared Levitt 6-2, 6-1. No. 3 Adam Wenick defeated Wesley Anglin 6-1, 6-1. No. 4. Peter Manos defeated Jeff Heckmann 6-1, 6-3.
Doubles: No. 1. Casey Tenney/Timo Roehrs defeated John Casale/Jordan Whalen 6-1, 6-0. No. 2. Joe Cappiello/Colin Jacob defeated Brendan Cullen/Ryan Goldstein 6-2, 6-2. No. 3. Dan Cassidy/Rich Andreotta defeated Brebdab Allen/Max Robbins 6-0, 6-4.
The girls bounced back from a 5-2 defeat to Lauralton Hall on May 6 to topple Bunnell 6-1 on May 7 and blank New Fairfield 7-0 on May 8.
In their win over Brookfield, Newtownâs winning results were as follows:
Singles: No. 1: Christine Ciamarra defeated Emily Vulcano 6-1, 6-3. No. 2: Katie Serock defeated Natalie Bruno 6-1, 6-0. No. 4: Caitlin OâMahoney defeated Kristie Macdonald 6-1, 6-3.
Doubles: No. 2: Erin Nemeth/Ashley Cech defeated Jamie Herr/Kara Mendes 6-0, 6-0. No. 3: Kristen Tanner/Meghan Loose defeated Dana Detter/Shikha Vyas 6-0, 6-2.
In the shutout of Immaculate, among the highlights: Jenna Himmelfarb earned a two-set win at No. 3 singles, Nicole Vournazous won a two-setter at No. 4 singles and the top doubles tandem of Maxx Zimmer/Charlott Manos also won in two sets.
