MIDDLEBURY ââ Westover Schoolâs drama department presents the enchanting story of Shakespeareâs A Midsummer Nightâs Dream on May 23â24 at 7:30 pm in the schoolâs LBD Auditorium.
A Midsummer Nightâs Dream is a thick, ambrosial story of love, unbridled passion, and a night of handsome mischief in the woods. When beautiful Hermia is forced by her stonehearted father to marry her enemy, Demetrius, and forsake her love with Lysander, she runs off with the gentle-hearted Lysander. The plot thickens as Hermiaâs childhood friend Helena falls madly in love with Demetrius who loves Hermia and despises Helena. Hoping to win his heart, Helena tells Demetrius that Hermia and Lysander plan to run off, which leads to a breathless chase in the woods where the four lovers are put in the fairy path of cold-hearted amusement and honeyed mischief. The woods, on this special summerâs night, are alive with blossoming fairies, amoral elves, and two royal spirits bound in hatred of one another. Love remedies, amusing mistakes, changes of appearance, and the thin line between love and scorn are the ingredients of this production.
Marla Truini of Roxbury directs this enchanting play, with a cast of Alissa Ryan of Sharon as Demetrius, Molly Avila of New York City as Lysander, Jennifer Hart of Middlebury as Helena, and Robyn Ekvall-Dezzutti of Lakeside as Hermia.
