Police Urge Compliance With Safety Laws

Newtown police plan to conduct heightened enforcement of motorist safety belt and child safety seat laws from May 19 through June 1.

Town police urge local drivers to remember three rules while driving: Motorists should buckle their seat belts, obey posted speed limits, and never drink and drive.

“Obviously, no one wants to face the holidays with the loss of a loved one,” Sgt Doug Wisentaner said in a statement. “We are anticipating that increased awareness and enforcement will assist us in having a fatality-free holiday season,” he said.

The sergeant points out that there were 316 traffic fatalities in the state in 2001, 158 of which were alcohol-related deaths.

Courteous driving techniques and being well-rested are aspects of increased highway safety, according to the sergeant.
