Open House
At Cullens Memorial
An open house will be held at Cullens Memorial at 72 Taunton Lake Road from 1 to 4 pm on Sunday, May 18, to acquaint the public with the 20-acre camp and activity center, which is available for any local youth organization to use free of charge.
The open house will feature refreshments and demonstrations on boating, rappelling and rope-work, and open-fire cooking by local Boy and Girl Scout troops.
Cullens includes a two-acre activity field, four acres of wooded camping sites, and a seven-acre lake suitable for canoeing and fishing. The property also has a 2,400-square-foot lodge complete with kitchen, restrooms, a large activity room, and equipment storage.
The facility is available 365 days a year, 24 hours a day to all organized youth groups such as scouts, church youth groups, special education children, civic organizations, and other youth organizations in Newtown. Emphasis is given to leadership, outdoor, environment, conservation skills, and the development of youth under the leadership of adults and young adults.
Named in honor of the late Rev Paul Cullens, who started scouting programs in Newtown, Cullens is funded entirely by private donations from citizens. It is managed by a volunteer board.
