Museum To Host Sneak Preview Of A&E Biography Special

WATERBURY — In October of 1888, two struggling artists – Vincent Van Gogh and Paul Gauguin – joined forces in a tiny yellow house in the South of France. Their collaboration was the first step towards the realization of Van Gogh’s lofty dream.

In celebration of what has come to be known as Post Impressionists art and in conjunction with A&E Network’s upcoming Biography special, Post Impressionists: Van Gogh & Gauguin, Mattatuck Museum is hosting a sneak preview on Wednesday, May 21, at 7 pm. The event will be just one of a number of similar events taking place across the country in May.

Post Impressionists: Van Gogh & Gauguin is a two-hour special scheduled to premiere on A&E Network on Sunday, June 1. The special follows the lives of Van Gogh and Gauguin, whose tense friendship and unspoken rivalry, which began in the Provincial town of Arles and continued even beyond Vincent’s grave, produced paintings that helped set the stage for much of what we know today as modern art.

While both painters have been studied exhaustively over the past 100 years, their interaction and mutual influence have never before been addressed in film. The Biography special sets out to examine how their individual life paths informed their artistic identities.

Anyone interested in attending the sneak preview at the museum is asked to call the museum at 203-753-0381, extension 10. The Mattatuck Museum is at 144 West Main Street. Parking is located in the gated lots behind the museum, off Park Place.
