Hospital Newsletter Tackles Timely Topics

BRIDGEPORT — The connection between obesity and heart disease during pregnancy is the topic of the cover story in the Spring 2003 issue of Healthy & Wise, Bridgeport Hospital’s award-winning health newsletter.

The cover story, titled “The Heart of a Pregnant Woman,” discusses a two-year study being conducted by expert physicians at Bridgeport Hospital on the cardiac effects of obesity during pregnancy. Dr Steven Laifer, chief of obstetrics, and Dr Stuart Zarich, chief of cardiology, hope to learn more about how the hearts of overweight women function during pregnancy in order to reduce the risk of complications and long-term effects.

As part of a series on the hospital’s 125th anniversary, the new Healthy & Wise also includes a story on what may have been the nation’s first X-ray guided surgery in 1895, using equipment borrowed from a company that would later become General Electric. The story also brings readers up to date on the range of sophisticated imaging technology now available at the hospital.

Healthy & Wise readers can also find information on United Visiting Nurse Association’s free needs-assessment program, advice on managing gallstones from Dr Ingram Roberts, chief of Gastroenterology, and an explanation of strains and sprains by Mike Pineau, trauma program manager.

Healthy & Wise, recipient of a Healthcare Advertising Award for excellence from Healthcare Marketing Report, is also available on Bridgeport Hospital’s Internet website, www.bridgeporthospital.com, by clicking on “Healthy & Wise eMagazine” from the home page, or to request a free copy or be added to the mailing list, call 888-357-2396.
