STRATFORD â Coach Marsha Caine never expected to be in the position she is in now.
Undefeated.
It sounds almost crazy, but the Lady Nighthawks â who experienced a lot of turnover from last year, but welcomed in a large (and, as it turns out, extremely talented) freshman class â are undefeated at 11-0-1 after beating Bethel, New Milford and Stratford on Tuesday afternoon at Bunnell High School in Stratford.
âThe mid distance and distance runners were the big point scorers this week,â said coach Caine. âCarolyn Brennan had a great meet â winning the 1,600 and 3,200 and being part of the winning 4x800 relay.â
The âHawks had little trouble with Stratford (90.5-55.5) and Bethel (108-41), but had to tough out a close one with New Milford (78.83-67.16).
âJackie Curran came up big for us, too,â said coach Caine, âwith a 4-10 in the high jump. And Caitlyn Weber continues to be the highest scorer on the team, doing well in the hurdles and the 4x100 relay.â
Kaitlyn Murphy had a toss of 85-3 in the javelin to secure another first-place finish for Newtown.
The âHawks hope to complete an unblemished regular season next week when they host Immaculate, Weston and New Fairfield on Tuesday. The South-West Conference championship meet will follow on Wednesday, May 28, in Newtown.
