NEW MILFORD â It wasnât about finishing first, it was about taking a measure of themselves.
The Newtown High School boysâ track and field team headed into New Milford on Monday afternoon focused largely on the Green Wave â not that the Nighthawks expected to hand the Wave their first defeat of the season, but because they wanted to compete.
And compete they did.
Newtown went 2-1 on the day ⦠defeating Stratford (104-47) and Bethel (100-50) and competing fairly well in a loss to undefeated New Milford (88.5-61.5). The âHawks pushed their record to 7-4, with one quad meet remaining on the regular season schedule.
Peter Terrance continued to dominate by winning both the 110 high hurdles and 400 meters and coming in second in the 200-meter dash. And Matt Miller continued to push the bar higher and higher in the pole vault, taking first with a vault of 11-6.
John Collins (second in the 400), Eric Taylor (second in 300 hurdles), Joe Sgammato (second in long jump), Tim Robinson (second in pole vault), Evan Forstrom (third in long jump, third in 400 meters) and Tim Carlisle (third in 110 hurdles) all had strong performances for the âHawks.
Newtown will conclude the regular season on Monday when it hosts Immaculate, Weston and New Fairfield. The SWC championship meet will be held Tuesday, May 27, at 4:30 pm, at Bethel High School.
The results:
NHS 104, Stratford 47
NHS 100, Bethel 50
New Milford 88.5, NHS 61.5
