Trina Ramsdell pitched seven solid innings, striking out 14 batters and leading the Newtown Middle School softball team to a 10-5 win over Jockey Hollow of Monroe . . . a win which boosted the Lady Lions’ record to 6-0 on the season.

Ramsdell set down eight of the first nine batters she faced on strikeouts and didn’t allow a hit until one batter was out in the top of the fourth. Three of the five runs she allowed were unearned.

Erin Murdoch led the offense, going 4-for-4 with three singles and a double. Ramsdell was also 3-for-4 at the plate, banging out three singles and stealing four bases along the way. Kaitlyn Fenton (two singles), Krystal Ferris (single, double), Megan LaFlamme (single, double), and Lauren Cascia (two singles) collected two hits apiece. Chrissy Glander, Stacey Gordon, Ashley Ferris and Becca Narel all had hits.

Gordon turned in the defensive play of the game in centerfield, catching what looked to be a sure grand slam. Murdoch, LaFlamme, Glander, and Krystal Ferris all made fine defensive plays to lead the Lady Lions.

Newtown took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first thanks to a one-out single and stolen base by Ramsdell and an RBI single by Murdoch. After Jockey Hollow tied the scored in the top of the fourth, Newtown went ahead 2-1 in the bottom of the fifth when LaFlame singled, stole second and third, and scored on a Glander single. In the bottom of the sixth, the Lady Lions extended their lead to 5-1 on singles by Ramsdell and Murdoch and a double by LaFlamme.

In the seventh, Jockey Hollow scored four runs but Newtown scored five in the bottom of the frame on consecutive hits from Cascia, Ashley Ferris, Fenton, Ramsdell, Murdoch (a double), and Krystal Ferris (a double).
