The 2000 Fleet Newtown Open Tennis Tournament is moving along with the women already into the quarterfinals. Cindy Vavrek defeated Sui-Ying, 3-6, 5-7, 7-6 (7-5) in what appears to have been a tight match. Ms Vavrek will now play Julie Sanderude, the No., 1 seed, who had a bye in the first round.

Seed No. 3, Holly Robinson, will take on Linda Hatcher, who advanced with a default, Judy Toth defeated Lois Hoffman, 6-1, 6-3, and will play Lauren Elliott, who had a first round bye. Second seed Kristin McNiff will meet Deborah Eddy, who advanced with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Trudy Meyer.

Women’s 40 singles matches advanced Jana Barry over Andrea Ondak and Julie Stern over Helen Yee. Ms. Barry will meet Meredith Dommu and Ms. Stern will meet No. 3 seed Lois Hoffman. The other contenders all had byes into the quarterfinals.

Women’s Open Double advances were by Claudia Baxter and Phoebe Hodge (by default), who will meet the No. 1 seeds, Shirley Avril and Betsy Reid. Georgianne Sutor and Debra Turner, No 4 seeds, defeated Marie Ampeloquio and Lillian Valentine, 6-2, 6-3, and will now meet the team of Teresa Kennedy and Sharon Lees, who advanced 6-1, 7-6, over Sandi Fainer and Diane Gucciardo.

Sarah Hottois and Lorraine Wilson defeated Kathy Lifland and Barbara Murphy 6-1, 6-2, and will now meet the No. 3 seeds, Jeanne Mead and Virginia Payne.

Women’s 40 doubles shows Kathy Gibson and Virginia Payne (No. 1 seeds) beating Barbara Margherio and Anna Zohn, 6-0, 6-0 and will play Elaurie Appellof and Meredith Dommu No. 5 seeds, who defeated Patty Gabal and Dixie Moran, 6-2, 2-6, 7-5.

Nancy Bento and Barbara Frauzen (Frauzen replaced Megan Will, who had leg surgery) defeated Darlene Jackson and Julie Stern, 6-3, 6-2. Their quarterfinal opponent was not determined at press time. Mary Quinn and Muriel Schmitt defeated Nancy Giddings and Judy Lambert, 5-7, 6-1, 6-4 and were then defeated by Deborah Gray and Cindy LeBlanc, 6-0, 6-2. Bonnie Knapp and Prawphan Wilin (No. 3 seeds) defeated Sue Clark and Stephanie Oefinger, 6-1, 6-3, and will play Ms. Gray and Ms. LeBlanc. In the last rung of the draw, Loretta Bohnen and Denise Dougiello eliminated Debbie Cohen and Lisa Pottasch, 6-4, 6-2 and will play Susan Arconti and Joyce Lee, No. 2 seeds, who defeated Judy Kowalchik and Joan Pagliuco, 2 and 2.

Proceeding to the round of 16, the mixed doubles shows Brenda and Johnny Dye going ahead with a 7-5, 7-6 (9-7) win over Dan and Helen Yee, Joan Paglluco and Marc Swanson winning 3 and 2 over Loretta Roohnen and Michael Donado, LeAnn and Charles Rogers, 7-6, 5-2, 6-4, over Cindy and Larry Vavrek. Amanda Beatty and Mariano Moran played and won two matches putting them in a quarterfinal slot. They defeated Trish and Chris Taylor, 0 and 1, and then went to victory 2 and 1 over Nancy Bento and Gene Caruso.

Holly Robinson and Brad Harrington, No. 5 seeds, won 1 and 1 over Marie Ampeloquio and Andy Vonguovahn. Stephanie Oefinger and John Prittie advance 1 and 2 over Jana Barry and Howard Lasher: Sue and Corky Clark were 3 and 3 over Lisa and J.H. Swain. Jean Gabriel and Randy Howie were 1 and 3 over Anna Zohn and Bill LaForgia. Linda Hatcher and Terry Hewitt, 2 and 4 over Denise Dougiello and Gil Roberts. Laura and Chuck McConnell won 2 and 3 over Lillian Valentine and Sean Hope and Gremmy Dey and Tom Bozarth won 2 and 2 over Didi Tulloch and Edmund Yee. Susan and Hilliard Lipstein defeated Lori Wilson and Alex Tolor.

The Men’s open singles draw is nearly completed to the round of 16. Here are the statistics:

Men’s open doubles results show David Stone and Peter Summers defeating Bill Simon and Tom Holeva, 2 and 3 and then meeting Akash Lambna and Ritush Venugopal (No 1 seeds) and losing 0 and 0. Steven Knortz and Chrisi Radford moved past Jigs McHugh and Pat Smith 0 and 1 in the second round. Gene Chappell and Tom Roesch defeated Chip McKee and Tim Rives 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 for a berth in the quarterfinals. Randy Howie and Brian Stephens moved into the level with a 0 and 0 defeat of Chad and Sean Smith. Brad Harrington and Shawn Stillman moved past Tom Conrod and Paul Stauffer in a three set match, 2-6, 6-1, 6-4. Bob Elliott and Owen Robertson took a 3 and 3 win over David Beauchemin and Ed Perez. Roy Mirchandani and David Vatti easily advanced and will play No 2 sees, Bob Lapple and Al Turner, who won a 1 and 3 victory over John Grim and Penko Ivanov.

Most of the Men’s 40 singles are in the quarter final round with Marc Swanson. Tom Bozarth, Carl Bailey, Chip McKee, Mel Powers, and Ward Januzzi the contenders..

In the Men’s 40s doubles two matches are missing to complete the quarterfinal lineup. At press time the contenders are Joe Bouguin and Ward Januzzi, Rod Taylor and Steve Cornell, Walter Beatty and Steven Knortz, Larry Holtgrewe and Jonathon Seymour, Carl Bailey and Mariano Moran, and Arnold Fagan and James Langone, and Tony Daloisio and Fernand Starbruck.

Men’s 55 Singles quarter finals matches Dominique Nocturne (No 1 seed) and George Green, Ferinand Starbuck, who defeated Leon Barkman 2 and 2, and Stephen Olsson, who defeated Ed Regner 3 and 3, Harry Weichsel against Jack Schrier, who defeated Rod Taylor 6-1, 4-6, 6-3. Robert Feinson defeated Alex Tolor 1 and 3 and will play Bill Schmid, No 2 seed.

The Men’s 55 doubles contestants have not played yet as the draw in small and begins with the semi final round to be played June 3 at Dickinson Park.
